Optics Assisted 3 D spectroscopy observations for black hole mass measurements

چکیده
The very high spatial resolution provided by Adaptive Optics assisted spectroscopic observations at 8m-class telescopes (e.g. with SINFONI at the VLT) will allow to greatly increase the number of direct black hole (BH) mass measurements which is currently very small. This is a fundamental step to investigate the tight link between galaxy evolution and BH growth, revealed by the existing scaling relations between M BH and galaxy structural parameters. I present preliminary results from SINFONI K-band spectroscopic observations of a sample of 5 objects with M BH measurements obtained with the Reverberation Mapping (RM) technique. This technique is the starting point to derive the so-called virial M BH estimates, currently the only way to measure M BH at high redshift. Our goal is to assess the reliability of RM by measuring M BH with both gas and stellar kinematical methods and to investigate whether active galaxies follow the same M BH-galaxy correlations as normal ones.

A Stellar Dynamical Mass Measurement of the Black Hole in Ngc 3998 from Keck Adaptive Optics Observations
We present a new stellar dynamical mass measurement of the black hole in the nearby, S0 galaxy NGC 3998. By combining laser guide star adaptive optics observations obtained with the OH-Suppressing Infrared Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope with long-slit spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck I telescope, we map out the stellar kinematics on both small spatial sca...

We present two-dimensional gas-kinematic maps of the central region in Centaurus A. The adaptive optics (AO) assisted SINFONI data from the VLT have a resolution of 0. 12 in K-band. The ionized gas species (Brγ, [Fe ii], [Sivi]) show a rotational pattern that is increasingly overlaid by non-rotational motion for higher excitation lines in direction of Cen A’s radio jet. The emission lines of mo...
متن کاملCosmological Black Hole Spin Evolution by Mergers and Accretion
Using recent results from numerical relativity simulations of black hole mergers, we revisit previous studies of cosmological black hole spin evolution. We show that mergers are very unlikely to yield large spins, unless alignment of the spins of the merging holes with the orbital angular momentum is very efficient. We analyze the spin evolution in three specific scenarios: (1) spin evolves onl...
متن کاملThe supermassive black hole of FornaxA
The radio galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316) is a prominent merger remnant in the outskirts of the Fornax cluster. Its giant radio lobes suggest the presence of a powerful AGN, and thus a central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Fornax A now seems to be in a transition state between active black hole growth and quiescence, as indicated by the strongly declined activity of the nucleus. Studying objects i...
متن کاملThe central kinematics of NGC 1399 measured with 14 pc resolution
We present near infra-red (NIR) adaptive optics assisted spectroscopic observations of the CO (∆μ = 2) absorption bands towards the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399. The observations were made with NAOS-CONICA (ESO VLT) and have a FWHM resolution of 0. 15 (14pc). Kinematic analysis of the observations reveals a decoupled core and strongly non-Gaussian line-of-sight velocity profil...
